Pineapple Guava — The Ultimate Edible Evergreen for Phoenix Landscapes

Pineapple Guava (Acca sellowiana) is one of the most versatile landscape plants for the Phoenix Valley — equal parts ornamental showpiece and fruit-producing powerhouse. This dense evergreen tree features silvery-green foliage, stunning edible red-and-white flowers in spring, and sweet tropical fruit in fall. Extremely heat-tolerant, drought-friendly, and virtually pest-free, the Pineapple Guava thrives with minimal care. Whether you're creating an edible hedge in Scottsdale, adding a privacy screen in Mesa, or planting an ornamental fruit tree in a Chandler courtyard — Pineapple Guava does it all.

Pineapple Guava Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Edible Privacy Hedge

Pineapple Guava's dense evergreen growth makes it one of the best edible hedge plants for Phoenix. Plant 5–6 feet apart for a thick privacy screen that also produces fruit every fall. A 40-foot fence line needs about 7–8 plants. The silvery foliage adds a softer, more refined texture than typical hedge plants.

Ornamental Fruit Tree

As a standalone specimen, Pineapple Guava delivers four-season interest: silvery foliage year-round, dramatic edible flowers in spring, tropical fruit in fall, and a naturally attractive shape that needs minimal pruning. Plant one near a patio, entry, or outdoor kitchen in Gilbert, Tempe, or Scottsdale.

Low-Water Landscape Anchor

Pineapple Guava pairs beautifully with other drought-tolerant plants in a modern desert landscape. Combine it with Texas Sage, Yellow Bells, and Lantana from Three Timbers for a colorful, low-water garden that includes a bonus fruit harvest. Its compact size works well in smaller residential lots.

Best Time to Plant Pineapple Guava in Phoenix

Fall (October–November) is the ideal planting window. Warm soil encourages root establishment while cooler air reduces transplant stress. The tree gets 6–8 months of root growth before its first Phoenix summer. Spring (March–April) is a solid second choice — just plan for more frequent watering through the first summer.

How to Plant Pineapple Guava

  1. Dig wide, not deep — 2–3x the root ball width, same depth as the container.
  2. Check for caliche — Break through any hardpan layer for proper drainage.
  3. Backfill with native soil — A light 20% compost amendment is fine but not required.
  4. Spacing — 5–6 ft apart for hedge; 10–12 ft for standalone specimens.
  5. Water basin — Build a 3–4 inch soil ring around the root zone to direct water to the roots.
  6. Mulch — 2–3 inches of bark or gravel mulch around the base to retain moisture.

Watering Pineapple Guava in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

  • Weeks 1–2: Every 1–2 days, deep and slow (20–30 minutes per session)
  • Months 1–2: Every 3–4 days
  • Months 3–6: Every 7–10 days (every 5–7 days during peak summer)
  • After Year 1: Every 10–14 days in summer; every 3–4 weeks in winter

Drip Irrigation

Place 2–3 emitters 18–24 inches from the trunk, each delivering 2–4 GPH. Pineapple Guava is drought-tolerant once established but produces more and larger fruit with consistent deep watering during spring bloom and fall fruit development.

Does Pineapple Guava need a pollinator?
Pineapple Guava is partially self-fertile, but fruit production improves significantly when you plant two or more trees for cross-pollination. If space is limited, a single tree will still produce some fruit.

What does Pineapple Guava fruit taste like?
The fruit has a unique tropical flavor often described as a blend of pineapple, guava, and mint. The flesh is sweet and aromatic with a slightly gritty texture similar to a pear. It's delicious fresh, in smoothies, or in jams.

Is Pineapple Guava drought tolerant?
Yes. Once established, Pineapple Guava handles Phoenix drought conditions well. It will survive on minimal water but produces better fruit and foliage with moderate irrigation.

Can I eat the flowers?
Yes! Pineapple Guava flowers are edible and have a sweet, slightly spicy flavor. They make a beautiful and tasty addition to salads, desserts, and cocktails. Picking flowers won't significantly reduce fruit production.

  • Japanese Privet Tree — A lush evergreen option for dense privacy screening.
  • Bottle Brush Tree — A colorful evergreen with red flowers and low water needs.

How Many Pineapple Guava Do I Need?

With a mature width of 10 to 15 feet, Pineapple Guava works as both an edible hedge and a standalone fruit tree. For a dense, fruit-bearing privacy screen, space plants about 5 to 6 feet apart so they knit into a solid wall. As an ornamental specimen, give a single plant 10 to 12 feet of room to show its natural form.

Hedge run length Plants needed (5–6 ft spacing)
20 ft 4
40 ft 7–8
60 ft 11–12

For fruit, plant at least two for cross-pollination and a heavier harvest.

Pineapple Guava Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb–Apr): Showy red-and-white edible flowers open and draw pollinators. New silvery growth flushes. A good second planting window.
  • Summer (May–Sep): Handles Phoenix heat and reflected warmth well, holding its evergreen foliage. Keep water consistent through bloom and fruit set; afternoon shade in the hottest reflected-heat spots keeps foliage crisp. Monsoon humidity is welcome.
  • Fall (Oct–Nov): Harvest season. Sweet pineapple-mint fruit ripens and drops. Prime planting season for new trees.
  • Winter (Dec–Jan): Evergreen and reliably cold-hardy in the Valley, tolerating temperatures down to about 15°F with no special protection.

Plant It With

  • Pomegranate: another heat-loving, low-water fruit tree that extends the backyard harvest into fall.
  • Fig Tree: a reliable Phoenix producer that rounds out a small edible orchard.
  • Japanese Privet Tree: a dense evergreen that pairs for a mixed privacy screen.
  • Bottle Brush Tree: a colorful low-water evergreen that adds red bloom and pollinator value.

Is Pineapple Guava Right for Your Yard?

Pineapple Guava thrives in full sun to light afternoon shade, in well-draining or amended caliche soil, and works equally well as a clipped edible hedge or a free-form specimen with year-round silvery foliage. It is one of the most cold-hardy and trouble-free edibles for the Valley. It is not the best fit right at a pool edge, since it drops fruit in fall, or in a spot where you cannot give it steady water through bloom and fruit set if you want a full harvest.

Highly recommended as a 2nd phone or primary phone if your needs are not too demanding
Color: Blue
I was looking for a small phone to replace my Jelly Pro/Palm. This phone resolves all the issues with thes older phones in regards to performance. Phone is very responsive and has minimum/no lag for my general use. The screen is clear and usable, though viewing take a slight hit when at more extreme angles. With Android 13 loaded, it allows me to use Android auto (Android 8 and the Jelly Pro/Palm doesn't support this ability). Unihertz has published that the phone will get Android 16 in April, 2026, bringing the OS up-to-date. Touch screen works better than either of the older phones and I have had no issues typing. Battery is much better than the prior phones, lasting about slightly less than my Pixel 9a. Charging is very quick given the small battery size the max charging speed of the phone. The phone is thicker than the other phones, but overall thickness actually makes the phone easier to handle. The phone works fine with T-Mobile. CONS The buttons are not placed well for me as a right-hander. It is awkward to reach the volume buttons. Also, the fingerprint reader is badly placed for such a small phone. I have to awkwardly squinch my finger to reach it. Additionally, it doesn't always read correctly. I do believe the camera is slightly better, but not close to a normal sized phone. It will work in a pinch, but wouldn't use it on vacation for memories I wanted to keep. The phone is missing the ability to support an eSim. The phone is larger and heavier than the older 2 phones, but this allows for the larger battery/longer run times. Also, the case it difficult to take off the first time to put in your SIM because of the shape of the phone. This is a great 2nd phone for use around your normal area of business or when exercising. If you take one phone when you travel, I would get a more flexible standard phone that supports eSim and has a camera that takes high quality pictures/video.

Sensible Phone.
Color: Blue
This is a life-changing device. Thank you, Unihertz for making it. It's really helpful if you have small hands and are tired of (physically and mentally) using a large phone. I have a behemoth in the form of S24 Ultra. I juts got so frustrated one day about its size and ordered this device. It's working great with my Mint Mobile; which uses T-Mobile's network. Apparently, AT&T doesn't work on this; so, watch out for that one. The size is perfect for reaching the top corners of the screen. Personally, I am able to type precisely. Google Keyboard's swiping function, as on other devices, helps greatly here too. It's a pleasure to hold a device of this size in my hands while making calls once again; takes me back to my dumb phone era days. It's perfect for not doom scrolling. The programmable button is great to save time. You can set it to any app you want. It offers three shortcuts with that button: a short click, a long press, and a double click. My short click opens up calculator; the long press activates flashlight (and turns it off); the double click opens up a third party timer app. I'm impressed by all the other features that device is able to house-- like, decibel level measuring app, a bubble level app, of course the IR blaster, a native compass app, etc. It's a thoughtful phone that works like a tool, rather than like a landmine of distraction and doom scrolling. It also works great with my Airpods. The fingerprint reader on my unit requires a precise placement of my finger. It's not too forgiving.

Great for decreasing screen time, a great phone with great features
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
I love the form factor of this phone. Perfect for those trying to decrease time spent online. Battery life is very good considering how small the phone is. I could often go 2 days without charging. Most apps work well, would occasionally have to turn the screen landscape to use some apps. My one complaint. The water resistance was not great in my experience. I took it on a run, and some sweat migrated between the screen and plastic case, and it was toast. (Pictured) I understand obviously phones can’t get wet, but when I tell you it was minimal. I truly loved this device…….if they would be willing to fix mine or send me another I would be ecstatic. If a version with better water resistance is released I will be buying.

Jelly Star mini smartphone is a bundle of joy
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
I've been using the Jelly Star about a week now and have no regrets about my purchase. I have the blue color and it's really pretty. This phone is as good as the reviews I researched said it was. Very fast, has all features of a regular smart phone but easy to hold in one hand and carry in pocket. This phone is 3/4" thick with a screen 2.75" x 1.5" and comes with a protective case. Good connection with T-Mobile cell towers, nice variety of ring tones, decent camera for snapshots. When it first arrived I was hesitant to commit, worried that with the tiny print I would struggle, but now that I got it connected I'm really happy with it. I'm old enough that without reading glasses, I need to squint to see the print in text messages, but it has a zoom feature that works well once you get used to it, and I plan to use other devices for viewing the images I take with it. Bought it mainly to have as a basic communication device that isn't bulky/in the way all the time. Don't have to constantly charge the battery either. Only using the phone for calls, texts, and WhatsApp; so far only need to charge it every 3 days. I took the time to research online how to stop apps from running in the background which should also help conserve the battery. I'm looking forward to loading music on it and maybe even taking it for a run once I get the headphones and armband accessories. I recommend it.

Screen Stopped Working Amazon Denied Refund
Color: Black
I bought this phone 2 months ago and within a week the screen stopped working. It stopped responding to any touch. I sent it back to Amazon in its original physical condition in its original packaging and ordered a second one. The second one has battery issues where it randomly starts heating up and dies within a couple of hours. Just found out amazon denied my return because they said the phone was damaged. It was not. I love the idea of the phone but the execution is poor and because there's no reliable way to get replacements I definitely would not recommend risking it.
